a toast ... (slurp)

What happens when someone wants to start something totally new in his or her life?

This question kept swirling in my mind for the past two weeks as friends told me of certain changes they wish to make. One wanted to find a job in a new industry, another wanted to start an online business. Yet another wanted to start writing a book.

Most are stagnant at where they are, frozen at the same spot by fear. A few brave ones took the risk to step into the murky unknown, like a friend who recently quit without a job because she felt it was time to start afresh somewhere. I would think it took her much courage, especially during the shaky economic times we are in now. (applause!)

Well, maybe it ain’t that scary to start something new? Maybe it’s like trying to cook a new dish. We kinda have a basic recipe as an outline, get some key ingredients, throw in some impromptu ones and voila! Hopefully the motley mixture is transformed into something divine.

My guess is that most of the time, we end up with something less than fabulous for our first try. But no worries ... we can tweak the recipe, change some ingredients, customise it to our liking and churn out tastier versions each time.

And maybe that’s how venturing out into the unknown is like. The first try may be just ... raw. Then we try again, and get better at it. Finally perhaps something awesome appears after a few tries (lucky you!) or a hundred tries (very good perseverance hmm). But the point is – maybe the water isn’t that scary and deep, and it is quite okay to step out of your boat.

So what’s that pet project of yours that is now a permanent fixture on your wish list? Give it a booster shot – move it to the ‘in progress list’!

As for me, today I have just turned a wish into reality – a blog is born! And here’s a toast to a new adventure ...
